Phonics
Through the expertly designed Read Write Inc phonics scheme, we teach phonics in a way that ignites curiosity and lays a strong foundation for reading success.
The Read Write Inc phonics programme systematically builds children’s understanding of how letters link to sounds, how to blend sounds to read and how to segment letters to write words and sentences.
We offer well-planned, fast paced sessions which provide challenge and enable all children to SHINE. Our children are taught daily, for 30-40 minutes in small, targeted groups – across FS2 and KS1. These groups are fluid and are changed regularly in response to the children’s learning. KS2 children, who require extra phonics support, get daily phonics teaching in similar small, targeted groups.
We make sure that all pupils read books that are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics. This is so that, early on, they experience success and gain confidence that they are readers.
More information about Read Write Inc Phonics can be found here.
There are opportunities throughout the year for parents/carers to attend phonics workshops, observing how phonics is taught and giving you the knowledge required to best support your children with reading and writing at home. Our Sounds & Syllables spelling strategy is built upon excellent phonic knowledge across the whole school.
Reading
Our passion for reading goes beyond phonics. We believe in helping our students develop a deep comprehension and love for text. In our whole class reading approach, inspired by the planning tool developed by James Durran, we create an environment where every child can authentically engage with texts just like a real reader does.
Reading fluency and comprehension are developed in EYFS through our Phonics Scheme alongside Love of Reading sessions. Teachers choose quality texts to read to the whole class, modelling expert reading skills, allowing for meaningful reactions and facilitating talk around the book. Continuous provision leads to an immersive reading environment, with many opportunities for children to engage with text.
Whole class reading is introduced in Year 1 and is taught in all year groups beyond.
Reading is not confined to a single subject or classroom. We see it as a thread that weaves through all areas of learning. Whether it’s exploring historical events, diving into scientific discoveries, or delving into the wonders of the natural world, our curriculum is enriched by the power of reading.
In our school, we instil in our students a lifelong love of reading – a love that transcends the pages of books and accompanies them into the world. We believe that through reading, our students will develop critical thinking skills, empathy, and a thirst for knowledge that will take them far in their educational journey and beyond. Together, we unlock the magic of reading and empower our students to become lifelong learners and passionate readers.
